The Trail description
The route starts and ends in Riomaggiore. The best way is to walk round a circle clockwise, so that the trail will smoothly rise and it won't take too much effort for walking. The route starts at the parking of the village, just follow the main street up. As soon as you leave Riomaggiore, you will see the beginning of the trail. The way to the Sanctuary takes less than one hour.
The main sight of the trail is the Sanctuary of Montenero, which was a parish church till the XI century. Then, it was reconstructed in the XVIII century. Inside of the Sanctuary of Montenero you can contemplate the decorated ceiling.
Montenero is 340 metres (1115,5 ft.) above the sea level and fantastic view of the coast can be admired from the viewpoint nearby. Here you can sit on one of the benches and simply enjoy the passage around.
Descending to Riomaggiore will take about twenty minutes, the trail starts just from the viewpoint which is opposite the sanctuary. There are many steps here, that is why we do not recommend you walk upstairs.
